How to compress a PDF and know what you lose

Compression may make a PDF smaller, but TotPDF currently converts each page into an image. The result loses selectable text, forms and links.

When it may help

If you need a visual copy for a form with a file-size limit, try compression and check the result. A smaller file is not guaranteed: an already compressed PDF may not shrink.

When not to use it

If you need to search or copy text, keep fillable forms, follow links or preserve a digital signature, do not use this conversion. Keep the original. A rasterised PDF is also unsuitable when you need to preserve its accessible structure.

How to try it without losing the original

  1. Open Compress and choose a copy of your PDF.
  2. Choose the resolution: fewer dpi may reduce size but also sharpness.
  3. Read and check the lossy-conversion notice.
  4. Click Compress PDF and compare its size and readability with the original.

Check more than the file size

Zoom in on small text, tables and any code that must be read or scanned. A smaller file is no help if it loses information you need. If the result is not smaller, TotPDF offers the original file without changing its bytes.

Maybe you only need fewer pages

If the document includes pages you do not need to send, Extract may be better than turning every page into an image. If you need an image for every page, use PDF to images.

Files stay on your device

TotPDF processes documents in your browser without uploading them to a server. Device memory still sets limits. Current compression supports up to 500 pages and may fail with very large documents. Always keep the original.
